OUR SIGNAL PATH

Our latest studio effort is a departure from our previous records in that we chose to record in a collaborative effort with Producers and Engineers outside of purpose built studios. The entirety of this record was recorded in three different home studios, the bulk of which captured on location at Lead Singer Carla Simmons residence.

track philosophy:

Let’s make a record with the least amount of editing possible

OUR Vocal CHAIN STARTS WITH THE ESSENTIALS

A Gefell m71 & Audio Technica AT 4047 are at the center of our Vocal Chain selection. The idea behind using 2 mics was to be able to blend the two according to taste with plenty of options during the mixing process. The m71 has lots of midrange detail, & an extended top end. The 4047 has plenty of chest, & a smoother midrange.

Acoustic guitar/mandolin: Similar to the way we captured vocals, we used multiple microphones…only this time adding a third. With these instruments we chose a Gefell m71, Gefell m295, & a beyerdynamic m160 in an over/under setup with the addition of a bridge microphone. Again, this method was to allow a nice blend of different voicings with plenty of options during the mixing stage.

LWG PRODUCTION mobile studio rig

Our mobile capture is centered around two 12u racks with an X32 RACK utilized as a 32 channel i/o interface connecting a Mac Mini running Logic Pro. This affords us a quick and seamless 48k multi track capture while allowing for multiple headphone and or live monitor mixes. Track treatment was completed in Qbase via an outboard chain of various vintage compressors and a two channel tube pre. LWG Mixes were completed in Logic both “In the box” and on the console simultaneously with very little compression and minimal EQ.

To record various guitar, mandolin and dobro parts we utilized a pair of neumann KM184 mics in an ORTF placement. This allowed us to grab a stereo image of the instrument. You really get to capture the full range and frequencies as I tend to really open the mics. We utilized minimal reverb to recapture a complete live, in the room sound. The solo on Waves really came out beautiful.

On upright bass we used a Neumann U87AI to capture tones. Upright and the main guitar/solo on Waves was cut live in studio for a really cool feel. The best part of less overdubs is capturing more moments.
